The Sky on Fire

The shadow emerges from the depths of the catacombs, beginning its dreadful ascent. Even Hyrule Castle itself pales in comparison to the size of this rising terror.

Gradually, the darkness takes shape, forming a being of pure horror as it climbs higher and higher. What was once a man has now become something else.

From Ganondorf the Demon King to Ganondorf the Demon Dragon, his final, monstrous transformation.

Link, caught in the creature’s jaws, struggles helplessly, even reaching the point of giving up.

Yet in that moment, help comes from above, literally.

The Light Dragon swoops in at blazing speed, its radiant presence forcing the Demon Dragon to roar in fury, giving Link the chance to escape. He free-falls through the skies of Hyrule, until the Light Dragon evades a devastating bite from its nemesis and catches him in time, lifting him higher, carrying him beyond the clouds.

But even in the upper skies, the Demon Dragon gives chase, forcing a standoff in the heavens.

Here, Link rises. At first hesitant, but quickly gaining his resolve, he draws the Master Sword. The blade glows with sacred fire as he swings it out wide, meeting the enemy’s gaze.

The Demon Dragon roars defiantly, and the climactic battle between good and evil begins.

Evil’s False Ascension

Ascension in general is usually a wonderful thing. Whether it’s a promotion at work, a relationship blossoming into marriage, or moving from renting to finally owning your own home, ascension is about growth. It’s about stepping into something greater.

That moment of success, when you’ve waited and prayed, when you’ve poured in your hard work and faith, and it finally comes to pass, it’s euphoric. Relief and joy overflow. That feeling of triumph is unmatched.

But unfortunately, the enemy tries to mimic this too. He loves to make it look like he’s winning, reminding us of our failures, stirring up circumstances that shake our faith, or whispering lies that cause us to question God. His strategy is to push us into our lowest point so that he can elevate himself, making his shadow seem larger than it is.

Ganondorf is no exception to this.

Deep within Hyrule, when facing Link, he carried himself with pride and arrogance. Even after being defeated, he wasn’t shaken. Unphased, he began boasting about himself:

“What a feeling. I had almost forgotten about the thrill of battle. That feeling as blood surges in my veins and I am not even nearing the limits of my power.”

Supercharging himself, he revealed his obsession with ascension. His next transformation was into the Demon King, his power growing beyond imagination. But even that wasn’t enough.

He went one step further.

By swallowing the stone, he overreached, attempting to ascend into something more than a king, more than even a demon. He became Ganondorf the Demon Dragon. His final form.

This is what the enemy does. He doesn’t just showboat, he overreaches. Ganondorf’s transformation wasn’t just about power; it was a twisted attempt at godhood. From the very beginning, domination was his goal, and he was willing to corrupt himself entirely to seize it.

But this mirrors something far older and far greater than the story of Hyrule. It echoes Revelation 12, where the great dragon, Satan, sought to wage war in heaven. His lust for control and his pride in power became his undoing. He was cast down, defeated in the very place he sought to ascend.

Even in the skies of Hyrule, Link understood something vital. With the Master Sword—the weapon that seals the darkness, in his hand, he held ultimate power. Yet he knew it was never meant to be the weapon that rules, but the weapon that serves. The weapon that restores.

And here lies the lesson for us.

When we are waiting on God for something, especially when it feels delayed, it’s tempting to seize control ourselves. To take matters into our own hands. To misuse the blessing when it finally comes. The test is never just in receiving the gift, it’s in how we use it. For God’s Kingdom, or for ourselves?

Used rightly, the light shines through. It fills us completely. And unlike Ganondorf’s false ascension, it never crumbles, it endures.

The Light That Breaks Through

Throughout the fight against the Demon Dragon, Link had the unwavering backing of the Light Dragon.

Every time Link fell, the Light Dragon was right there, lifting him up, putting him back into the fight. Not once did they flee. Always present, always faithful, the Light Dragon not only aided him but remained by his side until the very end.

This echoes the promise of Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

No matter the battlefield or the scale of the fight, God never abandons us. He is there from beginning to end, supporting us, lifting us, and helping us stand, even when the victory has already been secured.

Link himself had always remained faithful to Zelda. As her appointed knight, he put himself in harm’s way again and again to protect her. But in this moment, the roles shift. Now it is Zelda, transformed into the Light Dragon, who shields and saves Link.

This is no small reveal.

It was she who swallowed the secret stone to become the Light Dragon. She who carried the Master Sword, bathing it in her sacred power. She who gave up everything that made her “Zelda” in order to stand beside Link. For ten thousand years she patrolled the skies of Hyrule, waiting for this exact moment.

And when the time came, she was there.

Link had risked everything for her countless times before. But now Zelda was the one laying everything down for him. A beautiful symmetry of Princess and Knight, each willing to give up everything for the other.

Together, they defeated Ganondorf the Demon Dragon. And in their unity, we see the truth: victory is never achieved by one alone. It is born in partnership, in togetherness. Just as our victories are not ours to win in isolation, we achieve them through the presence and strength of God.

Because light always exposes the darkness.

When Ganondorf rose from the depths of Hyrule, his dramatic ascension only served to reveal him. His ‘grand spectacle’ of power also exposed him to the one place he could not rule, the skies, the very domain of the Light Dragon.

And it was here, in the open light of heaven’s expanse, that he met his demise. It was here that all of Hyrule shared in the victory.

The Dragon Cast Down

Strike after strike, slashing at the Demon Dragon’s weak spots, Link wears down the enemy, its health bar gradually depleting with each blow.

Even as the sky turns an ominous crimson red, our protagonist refuses to be stopped.

Leaping onto the Demon Dragon’s head, where the secret stone is embedded, Link unleashes a flurry of devastating strikes. Then, with one final thrust, he delivers the decisive blow.

As he freefalls from the sky, the Light Dragon catches him, carrying him upward once more. Together, they watch as Ganondorf, consumed in a storm of malice and light, explodes.

The skies clear. The smoke dissipates. Silence. No dialogue. No soundtrack. Nothing but the view from atop the Light Dragon’s wings.

Then, words appear on the screen, steady and certain: “Destroy Ganondorf complete.”

Ganondorf the Demon Dragon, the Demon King, the Menace Unleashed was no more. At last, he is gone, for good.

But getting here was not easy. Link had endured battle after battle, aided allies across Hyrule, and finally faced Ganondorf himself, a fight destined to test him to the very core. Link never gave up. Neither did Ganondorf.

And the enemy in your life is the same. He does not know the meaning of surrender. Not because he is impressive, but because he is in denial.

At times, it may seem like he is on top, like he’s winning, pressing you down, stealing your hope. But here is the truth: light always triumphs over darkness.

You have already experienced victories in your own life. And there are greater victories still to come.

Getting to the ‘final battle’ is no small feat. Along the way, like Link, you’ll face setbacks. His arm was struck by malice and severely weakened; you too may be hit by blows that spiral life out of control. But just as Link helped the people of Hyrule with their struggles, walking with them, not abandoning them, you too can bless others even in your own battles.

I’ve seen this in my own life: when I bless others, go out of my way for them, when I help them pursue their dreams, God has a way of blessing me in mine. Breakthroughs have begun to unfold. Doors are opening up.

When Link fought Ganondorf as the Demon King, he had allies to stand with him. When he faced him as the Demon Dragon, he had Zelda, transformed into the Light Dragon, at his side.

In your battles, you will also have allies, people who stand in faith with you, who pray for you, who help where they can. And when the challenge grows beyond what others can bear, you will have God Himself, the true Light who carries you to victory.

The lesson is this: no matter how powerful the enemy appears, he will always fall. Revelation 12 confirms it: the great dragon was cast down.

The Bible is not only history, but prophecy. A promise of what is yet to come.

So continue the fight. Continue to persevere. Yes, the battle is intense. But the victory ahead will be magnificent. Even more stunning because of the fight you put in.

  • Refuse to give up.
  • Refuse to settle.
  • Refuse anything less than God’s promise.
  • Refuse to let the enemy have the final word.
  • Refuse to let him win.

Beyond the Final Battle

Tears of the Kingdom is the most recent entry in the Legend of Zelda series, and it closes with an emotional, unforgettable conclusion.

But make no mistake, this is not the last we will see of Link and Zelda.

Evil will rise again in new forms. Other heroes will step forward to aid our iconic champion. And once more, Hyrule’s hero, its knight, will rise to ensure that darkness is overcome and new victories are won.

As long as the Legend of Zelda endures, the legacy of Link will never fade. And the same is true for you.

Tears of the Kingdom was just one story, in the depths, in the skies. Countless others remain untold. And this is only a reminder: there is more to come.
